A lawyer’s husband who was arrested by the Galgamuwa Police on suspicion, in connection with an incident of trying to free a drunk
driver from police custody by behaving riotously when the police officers tried to arrest the intoxicated driver in Galgamuwa town and obstructed the Police officers’ duty was ordered to be remanded until August 22 by the Galgamuwa Magistrate Nelum Priyadarshani.
Rumesh Shyamal, a resident of Mahawa, Uduveriya was remanded for this offence.
Producing the suspect in Court, Galgamuwa Police said that on August 10 night, when the Police officers were about to arrest a driver who was driving a car under the influence of alcohol, this suspect who was also inside the car had behaved violently, threatening the Police officers and using criminal force. He had attempted to free the drunk driver from Police custody.
The Police informed the court that the suspect who had tried to obstruct their duties, was arrested after much effort, and taken to the Galgamuwa Police station, and that the suspect was shouting loudly inside the Police station and behaving in a chaotic manner. It was also said that the duties of the officers had been obstructed by the suspect, even at the Police Station.
Police asked Court to remand the suspect. Galgamuwa Magistrate Nelum Priyadarshani, who took into account the submissions of both parties, dismissed the demands of the lawyers to release the suspect on bail and ordered the suspect to be remanded until 22 August. It has been revealed during initial Police investigations that the suspect tried to rescue the drunk driver by interfering with the Police, stating the name of a lawyer and saying that he was the lawyer’s husband.
Sergeant (17320) Mayura along with SI Lionel Wimalasena of the traffic division of the Galgamuwa Police submitted the facts to the Court and a group of lawyers including lawyer Kanchana Hathurusingha appeared for the suspect.
Investigations into this incident are being carried out under the guidance of Sub-Inspector Lionel Wimalasena according to instructions of Officer-In-Charge of the Galgamuwa Police, Chief Inspector Pushpakumara and Officer-In-Charge of the Traffic Division, Sub-Inspector Upali.
