Duo robs Church thrice in six months

The Maharagama Police arrested two suspects who broke into Maharagama Saint Mary’s Roman Catholic Church on three occasions and robbed donations and television sets and fled. After the initial investigations, the two suspects were produced before the Nugegoda Acting Magistrate G.A.N.T.K Bogahadeniya and were ordered by him to be remanded till August 28.

The two suspects who had broken into the Church in the last six month of the year and had robbed six television sets on May 30, July 24 and August 14 were found with five of the robbed television sets in their possession, at the time of their arrests. As per the information received by the Maharagama Police Crimes Division OIC, the Deputy Investigation Officer and Constable Samarasinghe, one suspect who was in hiding in the Parakum Mawatha area in Maharagama was nabbed and upon his interrogation led them to arrest his accomplice in the robbery who was in hiding in the Arawwawela area with the five robbed television sets.

The Police informed that the two suspects aged 23 and 26 were residents of Parakum Mawatha Maharagama and Arawwawela area in Pannipitiya. The initial investigations into the robbery had also revealed that the two suspects were drug addicts under the influence of heroin and ice and they were planning to sell the television sets in order to buy the substances.

While five of the six television sets were at the premises of one of the suspects, investigations are continuing to find the other missing one.

Further investigations are ongoing.
