“Crony capitalism is ruining our country”

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said yesterday that this country cannot be saved as long as there is crony capitalism.

Crony capitalists exploit economies very systematically.

The Opposition Leader said this yesterday at the ceremony to mark the conferring of the title ‘Deputy Sanghanayake’ on Ven. Nakalagamuwe Sri Sumanasarabhidhana Thera yesterday.

He further said that this is an era when the people of the country are suffering and the country’s limited resources are being squandered through crony capitalism.

Further, corruption, fraud and theft are still being practised in the country through crony rule, without investing in education and health. It is a national crime and tragedy, he said.

The Opposition Leader said that according to international surveys, more than 2.9 million children in our country have become extremely malnourished without proper nutrition since mothers and infants are not properly getting Triphosha relief regularly.

“The usual trend of countries that are going bankrupt is to find out the mistakes of others, but the Lord Buddha said that it is important to find out what we have not done instead of looking for what others have not done. Accordingly, everyone should be responsible to get out of this bankruptcy. But it cannot be done in the current political culture. Today, a crony political culture is operating in this country, where positions are run by crony politicians. This situation should be changed,” the Oppostition Leader said.
