A group of Kandy Police officials have arrested a Chinese national who flew a dronecamera near the high-security area of the Temple of Tooth and took footage while staying in a room at a hotel in Kandy.
It has been revealed through police investigations that the arrested Chinese man had directed the drone camera yesterday (21) at around 9.30 p.m. during the first Kumbal Perahera ceremony of the Kandy Esala festival. After recognising that a drone camera was flying over the Temple of Tooth, a group of Air Force officers deployed for special duties for the Esala Perehara procession have taken steps to shoot down the drone camera.
Fallen into the Ampitiya Red Culvert area, the drone has been handed over to the Police Computer Unit for further investigation. Police said that this 43-year-old Chinese national arrived in Sri Lanka on August 20 and he came to Kandy and stayed at the hotel next day.
Investigations are being conducted by Kandy Police Headquarters on the instructions of Chief Inspector Rasika Sampath.
