Minister seeks stakeholders’ opinion on new Fisheries Act

The need has arisen to repeal the Fisheries Act. No.2 of 1996 and to introduce a new Act in order to find solutions to prevailing issues in the fisheries sector, for its betterment and to harvest the fisheries resources through the conservation and management of the fisheries and aquatic resources in a sustainable manner.

In order to succeed in this endaevour, the opinions and suggestions of all the stakeholders should be obtained. At the discussion held at the ministry on August 17 (Thursday), Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda said that by now both the Fisheries Ministry and the Department have prepared a draft and instructed the officials to take measures to obtain the suggestions and opinions from all stakeholders before September end.

After receiving the suggestions and opinions, the Minister hopes to include them in the draft act and to submit it to the Cabinet for its approval, before September end. The Minister further stated that through the passing of this Act, a great service will be rendered to the fisheries sector.

Fisheries Ministry Secretary Indu Rathnayake and the relevant officials from the Fisheries Department attended the discussion.
