The Matale Police has commenced an inquiry following a complaint made by a gem businessman that a gemstone to the value of Rs.70 million found from one of the gem pits owned by him has been robbed by a backhoe operator.
He has stated that the robbery has taken place at a gem pit situated in the Dewaledeniya Elpitiya Estate that is within the area that falls under the Matale Police division.
The millionaire gem businessman living in Haththotu Amuna Dewaledeniya made the police complaint on Saturday (26). According to his complaint the robbery had taken place last December. The gem merchant has revealed to the police that the backhoe driver had stolen this from the gem pit when he was overseas on a business trip.
