The brain drain in Sri Lanka has created new opportunities for youth who remain in the country, said famed CEO of several international and local companies Dr. Kishu Gomes.
He said that records indicate that over one million people with families have left overseas from Sri Lanka in pursuit of greener pastures mainly due to the economic downturn. “Out of 350,000 specifically went out of Sri Lanka for employment.”
“However due to this factor new job vacancies have emerged.”
He made these remarks at the Inivos Consulting (Pvt) Ltd founded in 2019 hosted “TRANSFORM 2.0” event for the second consecutive year at the Grand Ballroom of the Galle Face Hotel on Friday.
He also said that around 600,000 sit for OL exam and another 350 000 sit for A/L. But sadly only around 50 000 make it to local universities.”
Gomes also said that one of the main reasons for the economic downturn was high debt repayment, which the then government even did not calculate.
“When government had to settle the debt It came as a shock and authorities were not ready to cope with it.”
He advised the business community to take a leaf from this and not to repeat the same mistake the country did. The primary goal of the event was to enlighten business leaders about the significance of investing in an ERP application for their enterprises and to showcase how Inivos Consulting plans to assist by offering tailor-made solutions to facilitate their business evolution.
Founded in 2019, Inivos Consulting also hosted a panel discussion moderated by Chief Operating Officer, Ayomi Gunawardena and former CEO of IFS and Chairman ICTA Jayantha de Silva said that real technology transformation started after the World War 2 as many big countries started going out looking for resources like iron.
“To monitor these movements new technological systems were introduced.”
He said that this process continued and today high tech systems like AI have become a key factor for businesses to survive. “Technology has got engaged in business even to the extent that today you could find ‘virtual board members’ in companies (via chat box) who perform better than human board members!”
He said at one time in recent history there was a time that Sri Lanka had overtaken India in ICT exports. But sadly Sri Lanka could not maintain that.”
The panel discussion emphasized the significance of business transformation while having ERP as the backbone, their role in overall business expansion, and instances of successful implementation.
