A group of Custom officers seized a stock of ulundu worth about Rs. 31 million, which had been illegally imported into Sri Lanka by declaring it as chickpeas to the Colombo Port Customs, at the Orugodawatte Container Terminal yesterday (4), Director of Customs Seevali Arukgoda said. A total of 228 sacks of 30 kg bags of chickpeas were packed near the door of this container, in order to mislead the Customs officials who inspected this container.

But during further inspection in this container, the Customs officials discovered 574 sacks of 30 kg bags each containing ulundu.

There were 17,200 kilos of ulundu worth Rs. 31 million.

The consignment was brought to the Colombo Port from Chennai, India, on August 26 by a businessman residing in Maradana.

If this container had been released from the port, Sri Lanka would lose tax revenue of Rs. 5.2 million, the Director of Customs said.

Sri Lanka Customs has summoned this importer and started further investigations on the matter.
