Trust deficit between people and politicians exists – SJB member
Dr. Dhanawardana Guruge, a member of the Working Committee of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) said that people with integrity should be elected to Parliament for the country’s development. “Some people insult all 225 Members of the Parliament. There are people who love the country. However, there were people who were used to lying in politics. The worst punishment they can be given is suspecting even the truth told by them,” he said.
Addressing a press conference, Dr. Guruge further said, “The Government is trying to mislead the international community. Without following the available rules, they now have brought a new Act and say that they will act against corruption. If so, they need to make the law retrospective and punish the thieves. However, the thieves are still at large.”
“Inflation cannot be decreased by printing money. What happens to the incomes from tourism, agricultural and industrial exports?” Dr. Guruge asked.
“Poor people who default on small loans are subjected to punishment. Banks terrorize them. However, the Government is taking the begging bowl around the world. Although the Government is not ashamed, the people are not like them. They have self-respect. The Government must admit the people’s difficulty of day-to-day living. They cannot meet their electricity and water bills. They cannot get treatment at the Government hospitals. Agriculture is unstable and risky. They have lost their livelihoods. Meanwhile, the academics and professionals are fed up and are leaving the country, he said.
