An Army soldier who was fleeing on a train, carrying a T-56 firearm, with the intention of endangering his wife and the man she was having an extramarital affair with, was arrested by the Palai Police, on Sunday (03). An Army soldier, a resident of Ambanpola, who was attached to the First Mechanics Army camp in Aiyakachchi, was arrested while fleeing with the firearm.
Police said that the soldier’s wife, who is 29, had left the soldier and gone to live with another man. Police also said that this soldier who was disappointed about that, had left the Army camp while they were on duty at the third gate of the camp, and had taken the T-56 weapon and ammunition on the morning of September 3.
Army intelligence officials had received information about this and informed the higher military officials and along with the Police launched an operation to trap him. As a result, the fleeing soldier who was travelling on a train that was running from Jaffna to Colombo, was taken into custody at Araviar Nagar by officers of the Palai Police.
During questioning, he had said that he had a problem with his wife and he was carrying the firearm to solve the problem, one way or another.
The suspect soldier was to be produced in Court.
