Peradeniya University Agriculture Faculty’s Prof.Buddhi Marambe said that the country’s paddy harvest has not yet reached the pre-2021 level.

He said that in order to reach the pre-2021 level, in the upcoming Maha Season the farmers should prepare the land at the right time and start cultivation according to the instructions of the Agriculture Department.

He said that about sixty thousand acres of paddy cultivated land was destroyed without water in this year’s Yala season and because of this, the harvest has decreased by about one hundred thousand metric tonnes.

He emphasised that due to the failure to provide the required amount of fertilizer to the farmers in the last Maha Season, the harvest decreased by about 15 percent and in this situation, it is still not possible to bring the harvest back to the state before 2021.

Since this year is an El-Nino year, there may be convective rains in the months of October and November, Northeast monsoons in December, and dry weather conditions in the Northeast monsoons in January and February, so farmers should pay more attention to it and prepare and cultivate the land in time for the next Maha Season, he said.
