Geetha calls for stringent laws to curb criminality toward women and children

Women and Children Affairs State Minister Geetha Kumarasinghe said that perpetrators of women and child violence, murderers and drug traffickers should be given the capital punishment.

She emphasized that it is necessary to implement severely strict laws in order to reduce violence against women and children. Moreover it should protect the country and its citizens from the menace of drugs.

She pointed out that many criminals do not hesitate to commit such heinous crimes due to the current lax nature of prevailing laws in the country. She also, expressed confidence that if strict laws and regulations are implemented, then the committing of such crimes will surely decrease out of fear of its consequences.

State Minister Kumarasinghe said that even though she also admits that crime cannot be prevented by punishment alone, but severe punishment instead of lenient punishment for serious criminals will reduce the number of crimes to some extent.
