Pensioners warned of lottery racket

Information has been reported from various parts of the country about a group that is defrauding money from pensioners after obtaining their bank account and Identity card details through WhatsApp after calling them while pretending to be from the Pensions Department and claiming the relevant details are needed to update the information and to enroll them in a lottery for pensioners.

It was also reported that such calls have been received by several pensioners in the Rambukkana Divisional Secretariat area. The Grama Niladhari officials in charge of the area said they are not seeking any information from pensioners to update their data or for any other purpose.

However when inquired officials from several Police stations in different parts of the country said they have not received any complaint that pensioners have been caught in such a fraud.
