The Nittambuwa Police have started an investigation to arrest two persons who opened the security

locks of an ATM machine of a bank in Nittambuwa town and stole over Rs.7.8 million.

Police said that the theft from the bank’s ATM took place last Saturday between 1.05 am and 1.20 am. Police said that CCTV footage shows a person entering the booth around 1.05 in the morning and opening the security locks and making a phone call and then going out. At the same time, another person enters the booth and opens the ATM and takes money from the machine and stuffs them into a bag.

Police said camera footage shows that the first person involved in the theft was wearing a face mask and the second one was wearing a head covering. A complaint was made to Police Monday (18) by the manager of the private security company in charge of depositing the money into the machine. In the investigation, it has been found that this ATM was opened the previous day and 10 million rupees was deposited.

After the theft of the money, after receiving the message through the data system that the machine has run out of money, the relevant security company had deposited money in the machine again, a senior Police officer said.

When perusing the data system, information had been revealed that the money was not issued through this machine properly and a further probe had revealed information about the theft.

Police said that there is a special key to open the locks of the ATM machines and even with that key there is some security mechanism in opening the locks.

According to the security camera footage, when observing how the locks are opened and how the money is taken, the Police said it appears that the person who opened the locks as well as the person who put the money in the bag are well experienced people in this regard. The investigation revealed that the two had come in a car.

There is suspicion that the two may be employees who deposit money into the machines of a security company or those who were previously engaged in such work.
