Sri Lanka’s former national champion Chandrika de Silva once again proved her fitness when she bagged gold and silver at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Senior Championships which concluded in Jeonju South Korea, last Sunday.
Chandrika the 7 time National champion from Seylan Bank dominated the 45-year-old age group, securing a gold medal in the women’s doubles finals alongside her German partner, Claudia Wogelgsang, a former national singles bronze winner in her country.
Chandrika de Silva said she is very keen to be involved in this sport after she was left out of the National pool while present Sri Lanka Badminton President Rohan de Silva is very supportive of Masters players continuing this sport. We love this sport and still actively playing and proud of my talent at this age. I also appreciate Seylan Bank who gives full freedom to continue this sport and take part in tournaments said former National champion Chandrika.
The formidable duo overpowered Japan’s Maki Jin and Mikiko Shimada with a commanding score of 21-7, 21-7 to clinch the world title.
Chandrika has used her vast experience to qualify for the women’s singles final in the same age group. Although she gave it all, she had to settle for the silver medal, with a gallant effort which resulted in a 21-14, 21-13 loss to the Dutch top seed Georgy Trouerbach after hard fought battle.
Meanwhile, Chandrika’s compatriot, Nadeesha Gayanthi the former Dharmasoka Ambalangoda shuttler who works at HNB, made her nation proud by securing a coveted bronze medal after going down to Japan’s Mana Yatabe in the women’s singles quarter-final of the 35-year-old age group. She displayed her prowess and determination, despite losing with a scoreline of 21-10, 21-14.
Nadeesha’s path to glory included a hard-fought quarter-final victory over India’s Parul Rawat, where she emerged victorious with 21-19, 21-16.
