The Sri Lanka cricket team faces another challenge after Wanindu Hasaranga once again injured his leg during a training session last Tuesday. Wanindu, who had to pull out of the Asia Cup due to a hamstring injury is included in the rehabilitation unit for full recovery and focus on the World Cup which will commence from October 5.

Hararanga is the Sri Lanka team’s key spinner with more experience and the selectors are looking to include him in the World Cup squad. The Selection Committee headed by Pramodya Wickramasinghe have a 15-member provisional squad for the World Cup including Hasaranga, paceman Dushmantha Chameera and Dilshan Madushanka who are progressing in their recovery. However, Wanindu got an MRI scan report yesterday with the results coming in today and the final decision to be taken after observing this report.

According to reliable sources, Selectors already got Sports Ministry approval for the provisional 15-member list while Dasun Shanaka was named captain of the side and Kusal Mendis as deputy skipper.

Meanwhile, the cutout date of the World Cup squad is September 28 and the selection committee is already in discussion to finalise the team but up until yesterday they have not finalised it yet, said a senior official of SLC. Wanindu Hasaranga is the key spinner and the selection committee wants to put his name after considering his medical confirmation. Sri Lanka will play their first World Cup game against South Africa on October 7 and it’s most probable that Hasaranga will be considered said, a senior official of SLC.

Skipper Dasun Shanaka remains skipper

Meanwhile, skipper Dasun Shanaka will remain as the captain in the World Cup yesterday. After the poor performance from Shanaka, there was a rumour about his captaincy but the selection committee discussed this matter and decided not to change his captaincy for the World Cup. A senior SLC official said, no need for a change in leadership and It is important to get players and skipper Dasun Shanaka’s confidence for the World Cup. Forget about the Asia Cup final and need to prepare for the World Cup. The Asia Cup was a good eye opener.

We have to play nine matches in the first round of the World Cup. I think there’s no need to make more changes and the Sri Lanka squad will resume their training tomorrow under the supporting staff, said a senior official of SLC.
