Minister grants special approval to dub Murali’s biopic into Sinhala

Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana said that special permission will be granted to dub the internationally-produced biopic ‘800’ into Sinhala as a tribute to the legendary Sri Lankan cricketer Muthiah Muralidaran.

The film ‘800’ based on the life of cricket star Muttiah Muralitharan will be screened in Sri Lanka from October 6. The Minister was addressing a special press conference in Colombo for the release of its trailer, recently.

This movie produced in India is going to be shown all over the world in four languages and the production team and the company have informed Minister Dr. Gunawardhana about the legal impediments regarding dubbing the film into Sinhala for the target audience in Sri Lanka.

The Minister who paid special attention to this matter has given special instructions to the officials including the Secretary of the Ministry to give special approval for the dubbing of this movie into Sinhala only.

“I would like to introduce legendary cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan as a unique character who contributed to changing the course of our country’s history and he is a national asset,” the Minister said.

“Muralitharan acted as an ambassador of national unity among the Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims and Burghers. At no time has there been an idea about him as a Tamil. Even during the war, the entire Sri Lankan people loved him regardless of race, religion or caste. He also gave that respect to his native land,” the Minister said. The film cannot be dubbed and screened in Sri Lanka under the provisions of the National Film Corporation Act.

The Media Minister said that he issued specific instructions to the Ministry Secretary and the National Film Corporation Chairman to give special permission to screen the film dubbed into Sinhala.

“I gave instructions to the Ministry Secretary and the Chairman of the Film Corporation to allow the screening of the film dubbed into Sinhala,” he said.

This movie is directed by M.S. Sripathi and veteran actor Madhur Mittal Raja Ratnam takes the lead role of Muttaiah Muralitharan.

Veteran cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan, former Sri Lanka cricket captain Arjuna Ranatunga, actor Raja Ratnam, director Errol Kelly and representatives of the production team were present at the media conference.
