Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, PC on Thursday said that the Courts, Police, Arbitration Boards, Conciliation Boards are all available to uphold justice and that it is essential to have an understanding of these institutions in order to seek their help to find solutions to issues related to justice.
The Chief Justice said that it is for this purpose that the Bar Association is performing this service for everybody in society and that this opportunity has been given to get some relief for the peoples’ grievances.
He added that the National Law Week is expected to make an effort to easily include all the lawyers in its process to solve the problems of our society.
The Chief Justice was speaking at the inauguration of the ‘2023 National Law Week’ organised by the Sri Lanka Bar Association at the Supreme Court Complex on Thursday. The ceremony was presided over by Chief Justice, Jayantha Jayasuriya PC and Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms, Minister Dr. Wijayadasa Rajapakshe, PC.
With the support of the Ministry of Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms and the Sri Lanka Bar Association, the European Union, the Asia Foundation, UNICEF and UNDP, the 2023 National Law Week 2023 programme has been organised and the legal clinic to provide legal advice and legal education to the people of the Western Province, was held on 28 and 29. From September 25 to October 1, arrangements have been made to hold legal clinics covering all 25 districts to provide legal advice and legal education to the public.
Aiming to change the opinion of the public about the legal profession, Judge C.J.Weeramantry introduced the National Law Week concept and programme to the world.
Justice, Prisons Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Minister Wijayadasa Rajapakshe, PC said that the rule of law has broken down to some extent with the recent economic crisis and to restore it back, all the lawyers in the country should work together to provide legal aid to all the people in the society. He said that the work done as lawyers is not enough and in order to achieve the desired goals of the people, it is essential to provide the maximum level of justice to all the people and that the Legal Aid Commission exists to provide legal aid to all.
Bar Association President Kaushalya Nawaratne speaking at the event said that the National Law Week was launched amid many obstacles and that the Bar Association has taken measures to provide relief to the people.
He said that as a part of the society, that they are implementing this programme running till October 1 by connecting all the branch societies established all over the country and that the aim is to help all the tiers of the society.
