Browns Hotels and Resorts have unveiled its comprehensive sustainability plans including waste management, energy conservation, coral reef regeneration, expanding turtle hatchery and mangrove plant preservation projects at the World Tourism day celebrations.
Their celebrations were held at Thaala Hotel, Bentota under the theme ‘Tourism and Green Investments’ with the participation of Sri Lanka’s key experts in the hospitality industry Sri Lanka Tourism, former Chairman Dr. Rohantha Athukorala, Browns Hotels and Resort, CEO Eksath Wijerathne, Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management Chairman, Shirantha Peiris and Prof. Raj Somadewa.
Wijeratne highlighted that sustainability in the industry goes with the environmental responsibility and said we are committed to provide guests not only with luxurious experiences but also preserving nature.
The objective of conducting the programme was to create the awareness of people how Sri Lanka could go ahead with sustainable tourism in the country by improving a healthy environment for visitors who are coming to Sri Lanka to enjoy.
The forum also included a scholarship awarding session by Browns Hotels & Resorts for the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hospitality Management, reaffirming their commitment to nurturing talent within the industry.

Chairman Shirantha Peiris said tourism can only be considered truly sustainable if it generates income and decent employment, stimulates trade and linkages and respects and protects our natural and cultural environment.
He said tourism is the strongest sector in our economy today with the arrivals of tourists and earning consistently and at the same time the sector provides thousands of jobs to our youth and helps other sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, transportation and entertainment.
Dr. Athukorala said as food security is a key challenge in Sri Lanka and the tourism policy makers must do carrying capacity studies before agreeing on tourist arrival targets for the next five years.
