The Maharagama Police said that a person claiming to be a retired Army Sergeant who fraudulently obtained a bracelet worth more than Rs.1.2 million from jewellery shop in Maharagama while wearing the uniform of an Army Captain was arrested in Pitakotte yesterday.
Police said that it has been revealed that the suspect had sold the bracelet to a shop in Nugegoda for Rs.900,000.
The suspect, who had come to a Maharagama gold jewellery store in a rented car, stayed there for a while and bought a bracelet weighing about six pounds.The suspect had indicated that the money would be paid online and that he was crediting the money to the gold jewellery store through his mobile phone in hand.
Police said that he showed the text message on his mobile phone to the jewellery shop manager to prove it. As the said money had not been credited to the bank till evening, the jewellery store manager had made a complaint to the Maharagama Police yesterday. The suspect who was arrested and questioned at his lodging in Pitakotte had told the police that he sold the bracelet for Rs.900,000 and bought gold jewellery worth Rs.400,000 to his wife and paid off a loan obtained from a person.
