S Thomas’ College’s Under-19 tennis team made a triumphant comeback, securing the overall championship at the annual All Island Schools Tennis Tournament after a six-year gap. They achieved this victory by defeating Ananda College Under-19 team with a close score of 3-2.
The tournament, organized by the Sri Lanka Tennis Association under the guidance of the Education Ministry, took place at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association courts on October 11 and 12.
In the semi-finals, the team from Mount Lavinia, led by Venuka Kithnula, edged out Royal College with a score of 3-2. S Thomas’ College played five matches in total, consisting of three singles matches and two doubles matches. Impressively, they remained undefeated throughout the two-day tournament, where eight schools participated. Coach Anjuna Anthony expressed, “It was a very tense match, especially the last one, played by Meneshka Ratnasingham. He put up an outstanding performance against Ananda College’s player and secured a crucial win. We are thrilled with Meneshka’s contribution.”
Coach Anthony went on to praise other key players like Zahaid Zihar, Venuka Kithnula, Rishen Dwight, and Ahel Kaleel, stating, “These four players were our best performers. They consistently played exceptionally well throughout the tournament, which ultimately led to our championship victory after a six-year gap. We are truly delighted.”
The Thomians’ journey to victory included wins against Stafford International School with a score of 3-2, St Peter’s with the same score, and a victory over St Sebastians during the group stage. This achievement earned them the top spot in their four-team group. The other group consisted of Ananda College, Royal College and Maliyadeva College. Notably, Maliyadeva College withdrew from the tournament at the last minute.
