Sri Lanka will bounce back, says Dunith

We have to adjust to the Indian wickets quickly and getting a chance to take part in a World Cup is amazing experience said Sri Lanka teams youngest player Dunith Wellalage.

The adjustment of the ground conditions and wicket is more important and these two are areas we are more concerned about said 20 year old leg spin all rounder Dunith Wellalage a product of St Joseph Colombo.

I always like to get experience from match to match and already I had oppertunity to play two World Cup matches. Getting experience is more vital especially as a young player I know I have to go a long journey.

I always review my performance and try to correct my previous match mistakes and this I have been doing from school level. My aim is to give full support to my team and I have no personal agenda. Actually all my team members give support as well as our supporting staff headed by coach Chris Silverwood.

This is my debut World Cup and it’s very important for me and this is a golden oppertunity for me. My plan is to build up more confidence to go forward. we got good batting wickets in both matches in Delhi and Hyderabad and bowlers faced a big challenge.

Our plan was to get over 300 runs but now we realized it’s also not enough and our main focus is to restrict our opponents to a low score. If we could do that our bowlers will get more confidence to bowl.

Everyday we are discussing about all three departments to go forward and I am sure we can win the next few matches to go for next round. We lost first two matches after giving good fight and we will correct our mistakes and bounce back , said Wellalage the former St Joseph s and National under 19 skipper. Our fielding was not up to expectations and dropped a few catches in Pakistan match. We seriously focus on this area.

My team captain Dasun Shanaka give good support to me and Matheesha Pathirana both of us junior players having less experience. He is like our brother while Kusal Mendis, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Sadeera Samarawickrama also are supportive. We can learn good lessons from them on the field as well as off the field. Especially in the dressing room we discuss our problems and get their support said Dunith Wellalage.

Delhi and Hyderabad wickets are different and we have to play in Lucknow and get some practice before the Australia game and we want to come back strongly in next few matches, concluded Dunith.

Wellalage already named for BPL franchise tournament in Bangladesh while getting more match practice is important for him. However we should protect this type of potential all rounder who also has good leadership qualities. In the absence of Wanindu Hasaranga young Dunith Wellalage has to do major part with Maheesh Theekshana and third spinner Dushan Hemantha also not got a chance to play a single game yet.

Dunith Wellalage is an attacking batsman in the low order and this is a plus point for him to get his place. However Indian wickets are not very familiar for him and has to learn a lot while his bowling also not familiar for most of the opponent teams and this could be an advantage for him.
