The Keselwatte Police said that thieves broke into the underground case production room of the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court for a second time in recent times, in the early hours of yesterday (17). Police said old case documents, firearms and gold items
confiscated as evidence are stored in this underground room. This underground room had been broken into on September 22 as well and it had been broken into for a second time yesterday while the previous break-in was under investigation. It is revealed that there were two private security officers and an officer of the Keselwatta Police for the security of the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.
In addition, it is revealed that the CCTV camera system installed in the Magistrate’s Court is not working. Keselwatte Police said that this underground Court case production room has two iron doors and is locked with four bolt locks and all of them have been broken. A senior Police officer said after the previous break-in new locks were installed and it was new locks that thieves had broken this time.
Police said that they are investigating whether any case files or firearms were taken. Information is also revealed that the case goods in the room have not been properly documented. Starting investigations into the incident, the fingerprint officers as well as SOCO officers conducted an on site inspection and the Colombo Central Division official sniffer dog named Molly too was used track the thieves. It is revealed that the sniffer dog has gone in the same direction she went when the case room was broken into last time. It is also revealed that although the Chief Magistrate informed the Municipal Council to remove a large tree near the Court room, it has not been implemented so far.
