Airport Police officers have arrested two Police Sergeants who kidnapped a racketeer and robbed him of gel packets containing gold powder weighing about two kgs.
The racketeer was at the Bandaranaike International Airport set to leave for Dubai. However, when he left the airport for some reason, the two Sergeants abducted him, detained him in a Policeman’s house, intimidated him and robbed him of his gold.
These two Sergeants are officers working in the airport area attached to the Tourism Police Division. A 30-year-old businessman residing in Koswatta, Kottaramulla arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport yesterday (17) to take a flight to Dubai. Police say that he entered the airport premises and stayed at the passenger transfer terminal.
At that time, a passenger on a flight from Chennai, India, met this person in an airport toilet and gave the eight gold jel packets according to an arranged plan. Investigations have now revealed that this passenger did not actually come to the airport to fly to Dubai.
A senior Police officer said that this businessman was caught by the two Sergeants of the Tourist Police when he came out of the departure terminal without going abroad, hiding eight Gel packets as a passenger who missed the flight. Katunayake Airport Police say that the information about this businessman was given to the two Sergeants by someone who knew about the plan.
The two Sergeants have been arrested on suspicion following an investigation based on a complaint made by this businessman to the Katunayake Airport Police. Two looted gold gel packets were also recovered from their possession. Police said that it weighed 634 grams.
After being produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court, the two Police Sergeants have been remanded until an identification parade.
