The Government has decided to establish an Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority to ensure the accountability, credibility, transparency and professionalism of the Members of Parliament.

The Government Information Department said that the Cabinet of Ministers has also granted its consent to the combined proposal forwarded by Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe to take initial measures in this regard.

The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval to get the views of the Speaker and all Party leaders on the preliminary draft, and consequently advise the Legal Draftsman to prepare a Bill taking into account the comments given.

Considering the importance of enhancing public confidence in the effectiveness, transparency and fairness of the legislature, it has been decided to compile a code of conduct for parliamentarians in Sri Lanka and to establish an independent body for the supervision. Accordingly, a preliminary draft has been prepared for that purpose.
