Minister to request Cabinet to defer restructuring of several agencies
Urban Development and Housing Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said a proposal will be submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers requesting it to reconsider the government’s decision to restructure several institutions operating under the Urban Development and Housing Ministry.
The Minister said a request has been made to the government to appoint a committee headed by Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena to take further steps in this regard.
The Minister said this during the discussion held in Parliament recently under the patronage of Premier Dinesh Gunawardene.
The government has taken a decision to liquidate loss-making public institutions. The Economic Stabilization and National Policies Ministry has appointed the State Expenditure Review Committee to investigate and report on such entities to the government.
Several Institutions including Urban Settlement Development Authority, Coastal Conservation and Coastal Resources Management Dept., Engineering Corporation, National Machinery Corporation, Building Materials Corporation, National Mine Action Centre, Hotel Developers (Lanka) Co., Ltd and Ocean View Development Institute have been suggested by the report issued by the State Expenditure Review Committee to liquidate or restructure.
The report containing the 14 proposals issued by the State Expenditure Committee Review Committee has been submitted to the Finance Ministry.
The Minister further said the Committee has not obtained any opinions from the relevant institutions in the preparation of this report and the relevant Minister in charge and the state ministers not informed about this.
Therefore, the Ministry does not agree with the recommendations of the relevant committee and decided to urge the Finance Ministry and the Cabinet of Ministers to reconsider the decision.
