The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has taken steps to strictly enforce the price control of rice islandwide.
CAA Chairman Shantha Niriella has instructed the officers to enforce the law against those who sell rice at higher prices than the controlled price.
According to the gazette notification bearing 2278/02, the maximum retail prices at which rice can be sold are Keeri Samba at Rs.260, Samba at Rs. 230, Nadu at Rs. 220 and red raw rice at Rs.210.
The Consumer Affairs Authority pointed out that an individual business can be fined from a minimum of Rs. 100,000 to a maximum of Rs. 500,000, and private company can be fined from a minimum of Rs. 500,000 to Rs. 5 million for violating the price control. The Chairman has given instructions to the relevant officials to conduct raids continuously all over the island, including on public holidays and weekends.
The public is requested to give information to the Consumer Affairs Authority’s hotline 1977 about wrongdoers.
