Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage yesterday (26) ordered the release of the 13 employees of Milco, who were arrested on charges of taking Milco Chairman Renuka Perera and the members of its board of directors hostage, on bail of Rs. 500,000 each.
They were charged with unlawful assembly, unlawful obstruction and trespassing.
The Magistrate made this order after considering the request made by the panel of lawyers who appeared for the suspects, to release the 13 suspects on bail.
Ariyawansa Bandara Rambukwella, Udaya Kumara, Thushara Calum Senanayake Gamage, Ajantha Hemal, Ravindra Bandara, Amil Buddhika, Chaminda Kumara, Indika Kumara, Premaratne, Srimath Jayantha, Ravindra Udayanga, Sudath Rohana and Banu Pradeep Kumara – the trade union leaders of Milco had been arrested. The Magistrate also ordered that the residence certificates of the sureties be produced. The dispute arose out of a decision regarding an employee benefits issue. A group of employees of Milco worked to prevent several board members including Renuka Perera from leaving the office.
The police informed the court that the Kollupitiya Police went there based on a phone call and brought the chairman and others out. The counsel representing the suspects informed court that the suspects had been arrested when they were inquiring into an order given by the Labour Commissioner to pay arrears of wages.
