Viren Nettasinghe notched his place in the pre-quarterfinals in the Indian International Challenge Badminton Tournament, displaying remarkable resilience, though he eventually yielded to Indian player Tharun Mannepalli in a hard-fought two-set encounter, with scores of 18/21 and 15/21.
“I was able to collect more than 1500 points, and this is vital as I pursue Olympic qualification,” said Viren
He highlighted his victories in the initial rounds against two Indian opponents but acknowledged that his last match against Tharun Mannepalli fell short of his expectations, attributing it to some mistakes that need prompt correction.
Viren Nettasinghe received a cash award of Indian rupees 10,000 for reaching the pre-quarterfinal stage. Reflecting on his experiences against his top Indian shuttlers, he noted that it has boosted his confidence as he looks forward to his next challenge in the Raipur Chhattisgarh Tournament, where he holds the top seed position.
Viren added, “I am expected to undergo training today at Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy.”
Meanwhile, 18-year shuttler, Aashinsa Herath, faced a setback falling short against Miraba Luwang in the second round with scores of 21/11,21/13. Aashinsa returned to Sri Lanka, yesterday, where he will take part in the annual Royal – S.Thomas’ Badminton tournament before departing for Raipur to compete in the International Challenge Badminton Tourney commencing on October 31.
