Bangladesh have not lived up to expectations in World Cup 2023, said Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan after their three wicket win over Sri Lanka on Monday.
In an ill-tempered contest at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Bangladesh eked out a win with three wickets in hand. Captain Shakib starred with both bat and ball, first picking up 2 wickets off 57 runs in his 10 overs and then a terrific 82 off 65 balls against a Sri Lankan side who tried to rile him up at every opportunity and Shakib was adjudged the man of the match.
Skipper Shakib spoke after the match and said that there wasn’t enough for the bowlers in the wicket and thought that the entire Bangladesh team bowled well in the game. I won the toss and with out hesitation I decided to bowl first and dew factor at night is the main reason and we knew bowlers had to face this issue at night said skipper Shakib Al Hasan.
“There wasn’t much for the bowlers, we bowled really well up front. Spinners kept it tight. Both the spinners bowled really well. Bowling wins us more matches, fast bowlers were bowling really well up to the World Cup,” Shakib said in the post match presentation.
Sri Lanka made 279 but that was good. However both my self and Santo had a good partnership that was much needed at that time. “We couldn’t live up to expectations but we knew that we can fight back, we had that mentality. We kept on believing and we kept on coming back and today it paid off,” he further added.
The left-hander was also the centre of controversy in the game after he appealed to time out Sri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews. Shakib stuck with his appeal and the umpires were forced to ask Mathews to walk out without playing a single ball. Mathews became the first player in the
history of cricket to get timed out. Later in the game, Mathews did get Shakib’s wicket, but by that time, the majority of the damage had been done against the Sri Lankan side.
Shakib also talked about Mathews dismissal of time out. Actually I knew there is a rule and I appealed and umpires asked me about my decision and I don’t know it was right or not I had to get decision and that’s all said Bangladesh skipper. I had to do everything for my team and that’s why I took that decision on behalf of the team and I got that decision according to the rule.
Shakib also said Bangladesh currently stand in the seventh position in the league table and have kept their Champions Trophy hopes alive but meantime Sri Lanka are in danger of losing champions trophy qualification having one more match to play against New Zealand on November 9 and Bangladesh have to play against Australia in Pune on November11.
