The Supreme Court yesterday (8), ordered the Commissioner General of Prisons and other officers to present the former Prison Commissioner Emil Ranjan to the Supreme Court on November 15. Emil Ranjan was convicted and condemned for killing eight inmates in the Welikada Prison on November 9, 2012.
This order was made by a five-member Supreme Court Bench when an appeal petition filed by him demanding that he be acquitted of the death sentence was called for hearing.
The petition was called before the five-member Supreme Court Bench of Justices Vijith Malalgoda, S.Thurairaja, Shiran Gunaratne, Achala Wengappuli and Priyantha Fernando.
Anil Silva and Anuja Premaratne, the President’s Counsels who appeared for the defendant-appellant Emil Ranjan, mentioned that the petitioner-appellant has requested to be given the opportunity to participate in the hearing of this petition as well. Accordingly, the President’s Counsels requested Court to summon him to the court and conduct the hearing of this petition. Accordingly, the Bench ordered the Prison authorities to present the accused-appellant to Court on the next Court date.
It was decided to start the hearing of the petition on November 15.
