CAA seizes hoarded Sugar

A series of raids were carried out by the Raids and Special Investigations Unit of the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) yesterday (14) on a storage facility owned by a leading sugar importer in Sri Lanka.

After the raids that were conducted by the CAA in the Peliyagoda and Grandpass areas yesterday, the storage facility owned by a major sugar importer was sealed by the Raids and Special Investigations Unit for hoarding over 250 metric tons of sugar that was found inside the warehouse, which was taken into their custody.

During the raids that were carried out by CAA team; another wholesale distributing point was also sealed during inspections, after discovering 5 metric tons of sugar which had been kept hidden, to be sold at a higher price than the recently introduced Maximum Retail Price (MRP) and the 5 metric tons of sugar was seized by the officers of CAA.

Accordingly, investigating officers of CAA who carried out the raids had also taken steps to file a court case against the owner and wholesale distributor on charges of selling sugar at prices higher than the Maximum Retail Price.
