Chrishel, an Athletic star from Gateway Negombo

Thirteen year old up and coming athlete grade nine student winner of the girls under 14 age group in 400 meters at the 52nd John Tarbet All Island Junior Athletic Meet 2023, Elpitiya Arachchige Chrishel Nethara Ranasinghe has brought honour and immense glory to her school Gateway International School Negombo in the field of athletics.

Chrishel who hails from Minuwangoda was bom on 18th February 2013 and admitted to her present school to the play group class in 2016. As she showed and interest on athletics from her saladed days her Parents Ramesh Ranasinghe and Anusha Silva made arrangements to hand over their daughter to the school athletic coach former airman Janaka Perera and from there she commenced practices.

Her first attempt was at the same year and at the 40 meters event of the Inter International Schools Meet where she swept the board and received a Gold Medal and in 2017 at the same meet participating in the 4 x 50 meters relay event her team won a Gold Medal. In 2019 and 2020 she was not able to do sports due to Corona Virus and in the 2020 Provincial Meet taking part in the under 12, 60 and 100 meters she came first and received two Golds and adjudged as the Champion Athlete.

Same year in the Inter International Meet she won another Gold in the under 12 sixty meter race and in the relay event her team grabbed a Silver Medal. Then in 2022 she won Golds for 80 and 100 meters at the Inter International Meet and same year at the Divisional meet taking part in the under 14 she came first in 80 meters and at the Provincial Meet she came third in the 200 meters.

Her latest attempt was at the 52nd John Tarbet Meet held recently and she won a Gold Medal for under 14 Girls 400 meters event with a record timing of 61.5 seconds and her sports coordinator is Dinesh Dissanayake.
