The Sydney Thunder revealed on Thursday (November 16) that a special seating zone at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) will bear the name of Sri Lanka Women captain and Sydney Thunder batter Chamari Athapaththu. This unique honor will be unveiled during the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) derby clash scheduled for November 26.

The initiative is a nod to Athapaththu’s remarkable contributions to Sydney Thunder, having scored an impressive 374 runs at an average of 41.55 and a striking rate of 134.05 in the current season. Her performance includes four half-centuries in just nine innings. The move also underscores Thunder’s commitment to promoting a diverse cricket community and creating memorable experiences for fans of Sri Lanka cricket.
Expressing her joy about the recognition, Athapaththu shared, “I am truly honored and thrilled to have a dedicated seating zone named after me at the Sydney Cricket Ground. It’s a special moment for me, and I am looking forward to the match at this iconic venue. I hope ‘Chamari Bay’ becomes a gathering place for cricket enthusiasts and brings people together to celebrate the spirit of the game.”
As of now, the Thunder holds the fourth position in the WBBL table with 13 points from 10 games. The team that finishes at the top of the table secures a direct spot in the final. Thunder, currently in the fourth position, is slated to play in the Eliminator (3 vs 4). The winner of that game will face the second-placed side in the Challenger to determine the second finalist.
