Education Minister Dr.Susil Premajayantha, who was elected to the UNESCO Board of Directors, was congratulated by the Speaker and both government and Opposition MPs in Parliament.
Education Minister Dr.Susil Premajayantha, representing the Asia Pacific region, has been elected to the Executive Council of the UNESCO Board of Directors from 2024 to 2027 by obtaining a majority of 144 votes out of 188 countries with a high percentage of 76 percent.
While extending his wishes, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said that this great victory of Minister Susil Premajayantha, who was a mature teacher in the truest sense of the word, was a victory for him personally and for the country. Being elected to the UNESCO Board of Directors is a very rare and difficult opportunity and Minister Susil Premajayantha, who was elected by winning a large number of international votes for such a position, had a great opportunity to serve the South Asian region and the entire world.
Dr. Gunawardhana said that Minister Premajayantha was elected to the UNESCO Board of Directors this year at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France.MPs Dallas Alahapperuma, Wimal Weerawansa and many members of Parliament extended their warm greetings to Minister Premajayantha.
Minister Premajayantha said that the UNESCO is an organization of the United Nations.188 countries have voting rights. Sri Lanka received the votes of 144 countries for this. That’s the highest number of votes and a victory for the country. “I am a member of the Executive Council of Commonwealth of Learning. Sri Lanka’s Education Minister has the opportunity to serve as a member of the Commonwealth of Learning and UNESCO Executive Council for the next four years.
