Squash star Matheesha to take part in two international tourneys

Matheesha Wijesekera, the 15-year-old prodigy from Royal College, continues to perform well in the squash arena. Fresh from securing double championships in the Sri Lanka Air Force Squash Championship, Matheesha is preparing to participate in two international tournaments next month.

His first destination is the 15th RedTone KL Open Junior Squash Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, scheduled from December 5 to 10. Following a brief three-day interval, Matheesha will take part in the OncoCare Singapore Junior Open Squash Championship,from

December 13 to 17.

Matheesha’s recent triumph in the Air Force Open Squash Championship saw him clinch both the Under-19 and Under-17 championship titles, marking his fifth double championship feat in the past five national-level tournaments.

His remarkable achievements include victories in the YETI Junior Open Squash Tournament, Air Force Squash Championship, Junior National Squash Championship, and Edinburgh Open Squash Championship.

Not confined to squash, Matheesha is also an accomplished hockey player for the Royal College. , he captains the Royal College under 16 Hockey Team, showcasing his prowess as a versatile sportsman.

Young Matheesha following in the footsteps of his brother Aakash Wijesekera (a former Royal College squash team player) and his father Lt Col Upul Wijesekera (a former Sri Lanka Army squash team player), discovered his passion for squash. Both Matheesha and Akash have earned squash colours at Royal College.

Matheesha’s squash journey has seen international exposure, including participation in the 30th Asian Junior Individual Squash Championship in Dalian, China, earlier this year. He has represented Sri Lanka in the Asian Junior Squash Championship on three occasions: the 26th edition in 2019 in Macau, China; the 29th edition in Pattaya, Thailand, in 2022; and the 30th edition again in Dalian, China.

His global squash odyssey includes notable tournaments such as the Doha Junior Open Squash Tournament in 2022 (where he secured the Plate Championship), the 13th and 14th RedTone KL Open Squash Championships in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 2019 and 2022, and the OncoCare Junior Open Squash Championship in Singapore last year. Matheesha also participated in the India Junior Open in New Delhi earlier this year.

Despite being selected for the World Junior Squash Championship in Melbourne, Australia, earlier this year, financial constraints prevented Matheesha from taking part in the prestigious event. Matheesha is under the guidance of Sri Lanka’s second-ranked squash player, Shamil Wakeel, along with fitness coach Thushara Wasantha Kumara and Royal College Coach RS Deen.
