A Tourism Integrated Development Project with an initial investment of USD 61 million has been mooted in the Kalkudah electorate in Valaichchenai.
If given the green light the project will be one of the most extensive projects undertaken in the country to generate environmentally friendly sustainable tourism integrated with other development projects development targeting both local and foreign markets, a key player behind the effort former Competent Authority of National Paper Company Mangala Senarath said.
Senarath also said that the project aligns with the President’s thinking of developing tourism while integrating it with other development initiatives.

The project proposes the setting up of an eco-friendly five star boutique hotel with a helipad and sea plane landing facilities. It will also have a 9-hole international level golf course.
It also moots a wide range of water sports such as snorkeling, diving windsurfing and kite surfing. Also it proposes an Ayurvedic Relaxation Center for both local and foreign tourists.
Coming up with a novel idea the project moots the setting up of a Paper/Printing Museum, a first in South Asia showcasing how the printing industry has evolved during last 100 years.
Also the integrated development project will involve a recycle paper production center targeting a monthly production of 10,000 MT. This aims to fulfil local demand for paper for printing as well as tapping the demand for recycled paper in the European market.
The proposed development project also moots a vocational training center for skilled labor migration, a garment factory, a travel wear factory and purified water bottling plant.
It also proposes a 25MW solar farm and organic greenhouse farming, shrimp farming and clay artifact factory and a bag manufacturing factory.
“In addition we will have a Montessori school , play grounds, clay factory, prawn farm, poultry farm, and many more. These all will come in to the project under one investor. These projects will be set up in 18 months after signing agreements with the Government,” Senarath added.
ITAK MP Charles Nirmalanathan and former MP Kalkudah S.Yogeshwaran had discussed the matter with the President recently.
Senarath stressed that the project when implemented will herald unprecedented development in the area and also will strengthen the national economy. He said the project will bring numerous employment opportunities and livelihood opportunities, especially for people in the areas of Kalkudah, Valaichchenai, Oddamavadi and Batticaloa.
