The Education Ministry is currently planning to hold the GCE Ordinary Level Examination in Year 10 instead of Year 11, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha told Parliament yesterday.
The Minister said that this decision has been taken to allow schoolchildren to complete their education early and according to this plan, children can appear for the OL examination at 15 and for the Advanced Level examination at 17 years.
The Minister replying to MP Mohammad Muzammil said that children who complete four years must be admitted to pre-school and steps will be taken to find out about the children who cannot be admitted and provide education to the nearest pre-school free of charge.
The Minister said that on this system, the age of children can be reduced to 15, and there are 4,000 schools with less than 200 children, and 2,900 schools with less than 100 children, and those schools can be taken to establish free pre-primary at the rural level. The Minister also stated that pre-school wardens can be trained and given the opportunity to study from certificates to diplomas and degree qualifications.
