Harsh punishment: Principal transferred to Gampola

Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha told Parliament yesterday that Provincial Educational officials have taken action to transfer the Principal of Rambukpitiya Madhya Maha Vidyalaya in Nawalapitiya to the Gampola Zonal Education Office with immediate effect.

The Minister also said that the relevant Principal has been transferred in order to facilitate the investigations related to the incident where he had allegedly forced some students in the school to gulp polythene and newspapers.

The Minister said this while making a brief statement regarding the Education Ministry. Several news reports have been published yesterday that the Principal of Rambukpitiya Madhya Maha Vidyalaya, Nawalapitiya had asked the schoolchildren to gulp the polythene and newspaper wrapped lunch sheets.

“I contacted the Central Provincial Education Director and information was obtained in this regard. Information has received a group of year 11 students of Rambukpitiya Maha Vidyalaya, Nawalapitiya had brought lunch wrapped by lunch sheets and newspapers and the principal had tried to force lunch sheets and newspapers because the school premises doesn’t tolerate polythene.

Sixteen year-old Kavindu Saranga and Shashika Chirantha who faced the incident are being treated at Nawalapitiya Base Hospital.The other five students who have faced the incident are Kavishka Dhananjaya, A.G. Kavindu Kavishka, R.M. Dhanushka Malinda, K.G. Avishka Prabhat and K.G. Dhanuka Dhananjaya. A complaint was made to the Nawalapitiya Police on November, 22 and the Divisional Education Director conducted an on-site investigation as a preliminary investigation.
