Committee set up to discipline Parliamentarians

Agriculture and Plantation Industries Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said that if any Member of Parliament is accused of theft, corruption and fraud, new laws should be prepared by Parliament so that Parliament can revoke the membership of those members after a thorough investigation.

The Minister said so while handing over agricultural equipment to Bata Atha New Youth Agri Entrepreneurship Village farmers on Saturday (25). The Minister distributed the plastic baskets required for the safe transportation of agricultural products by the Institute of Post-harvest Technology.

The Minister expressed his views: “Currently, our Opposition has an Opposition Leader like never before. Every morning, during the question time of Parliament, the time of the Parliament is wasted by bringing up a question that is not at all relevant to the agenda of the day.

“The Opposition Leaders in the past always helped the programmes implemented by the Government. But today’s Opposition Leader does not support any action taken by the Government to solve people’s problems.

“It has been 29 years since I came to Parliament, I have never seen such an Opposition Leader in my political life. The Speaker should also take steps to control the misuse of his powers by the Leader of the Opposition.

“Also, the discipline of Parliamentarians needs to be re-established. A Parliamentary Committee has now been appointed to introduce new rules for this. This committee will implement a number of rules and regulations in the future to prevent theft, fraud and corruption of Members of Parliament.

“We know that many MPs in past politics did public politics by spending money in their hands. Such a political example is now being lost in Parliament. There are only a handful of MPs who can be called good politicians.

Because of this, the proposals brought by the new committee appointed to establish the discipline of the MPs should be passed by all the MPs irrespective of the parties”.
