The 233 Infantry Brigade distributed dry ration packs among 80 Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim pregnant mothers at a ceremony held at the Welikanda Cultural Centre, Polonnaruwa recently.
Commander, Security Forces – East Major General M.K.U.P. Gunaratne figured out the basic needs and launched this programme. The event was organised under the supervision of Major General Gunaratne, General Officer Commanding, Infantry Division with the support of Colonel A.K.C.S. De Silva, the Commander, and 233 Infantry Brigade Lt Col M.I.S. Chandrakumara, Commanding Officer, 9th Field Regiment Sri Lanka Artillery and his troops.
On the request of Major General Gunaratne, a well-wisher and philanthropist Saminda Jayathilake donated Rs.600, 000.00 for this course to purchase the required items for pregnant mothers. Major General Gunaratne also handed over a cheque of Rs.10,000 to G. H. Samadhi Thathsarani, a student of Nelumwewa Maha Vidyalaya who passed the Grade Five Scholarships Examination. Samadhi also awarded a scholarship which was sponsored by Janith Bandara and it will continue this scholarship in every month until she completes her Advanced Level Examination.
Chief Guest Major General Prasanna Gunaratne, special guest Major General Nilantha Premaratne, guest of honour philanthropist Saminda Jayathilake and special invitees General Officer Commanding Infantry Division, Colonel Kamal De Silva, the Commander, 233 Infantry Brigade, Staff Officers of Security Force Headquarters (East), Senior Officers, Officers, Commanding Officer, and troops of 9th Field Regiment Sri Lanka Artillery along with Divisional Secretary of Welikanda, M. M. Hairunisha were taken on a procession flanked by the cultural dances performed by Nelumwewa Maha Vidyalaya students.
