Justice Minister visits Polonnaruwa Remand Prison, looks into inmates’ welfare
Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Minister, Dr. Wijayadasa Rajapakshe PC, participated in observing the affairs of the Polonnaruwa Remand Prison on Tuesday (28) morning.
Minister Rajapakshe, who observed the kitchen and vocational training activities of the prison, discussed the details of the prisoners housed in the special section.
After discussing with the prisoners of the special section at the Polonnaruwa prison, the Minister instructed the prison officers to take steps to provide him with a report containing the information of all the prisoners housed in the special section.
Although the facilities available are for 175 inmates in the Polonnaruwa prison, it has been revealed that 315 people are currently incarcerated there.
The Minister also made it a point to visit the Polonnaruwa Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre to look into the activities taking place there in treating and rehabilitating inmates addicted to drugs.
Professor Ven. Pathegama Gnanissara Nayaka Thera, Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya and Assistant Superintendent of Polonnaruwa Prison were also present on this occasion.
