A bus transporting foreign tourists had been hit by a train in Waskaduwa early morning yesterday (29).
The accident has taken place when the bus was transporting a group of tourists to the Bandaranaike International Airport. The bus carrying tourists had been hit by the train when it was attempting to pass an unprotected railway crossing in Waskaduwa. At the time of the crash, the bus had been on its way to gather more tourists from a hotel after picking up a group from another hotel.
The train had been plying from Aluthgama to Chilaw when it collided with the bus. It is reported that the Czech Republic bound tourists were scheduled to board a flight at 9 p.m. from the Bandaranaike International Airport.
Two foreign nationals have been reported as having sustained minor injuries in the accident. The driver of the train has been admitted to the hospital for treatment after sustaining an eye injury and the two injured tourists had been treated by the ‘Suwa Seriya’ ambulance paramedics.
The passengers of the train that collided with the bus have boarded another Maradana bound train to reach their destination.
