Leading the charge for Royal College’s Under-20 team is captain Minuk Pallegangoda, part of a 20-member football squad guided by coach RTG Raheem. Trinity College is fielding the same team as last year, under the leadership of Stephen Asher and the coaching expertise of Sanoj Srinath.

The tournament, initiated in 2017, saw its inaugural edition end in a draw. In the subsequent years of 2018 and 2019, Trinity College clinched the title, securing the JR Jayewardene Trophy. However, the tournament faced a hiatus in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Royal College resumed the series as defending champions in 2022, maintaining an overall tally of 2-1 in favour of Trinity College.
