0 9

The Met Department yesterday said that strong winds of about 40 to 50 kmph can be expected over the Northern, North Central, North Western and Southern Provinces and in the Trincomalee and Batticaloa districts due to the low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.

The fishing and naval communities in the deep and shallow sea areas in the southwest Bay of Bengal were warned of strong winds and rough seas as the low-pressure area over the Southeast Bay of Bengal has developed into a depression. The Department said that it is likely to intensify into a deep depression by today and it will further develop in to a cyclonic storm by Sunday (3).

This system is likely to move west-northwestwards closer to the Northern coast of Sri Lanka towards the North Tamil Nadu coast, the Department said

Indian media also reported yesterday evening that a well-marked low pressure area that persisted over the southeast Bay of Bengal and its adjoining South Andaman Sea turned into a depression on Friday. It will further intensify into a deep depression on December 2 before turning into Cyclone ‘Miachaung’ on December 3.

Tamil Nadu, which has been lashed with incessant rainfall over the past few days, is gearing up for an approaching cyclonic storm, as per the weather forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Cyclone Miachaung is likely to hit the coast of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh on the evening of December 4.
