Five arrested for running fake diploma scam

A 24-year-old woman and five others were arrested for operating a fraudulent educational institute in Bambalapitiya offering courses required for overseas employment.

Police said a total of 43 complaints have been received against the suspect and the institution, while over 1,000 people are reported to have got caught in the scam.

The Police stated that the woman, a resident of Giriulla, Narangamuwa was arrested following a raid conducted on the ‘Evolve College of Education’ in Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya based on information received by the Bambalapitiya Police Station officers on November 27.

Investigations have revealed that the suspect had provided fake diplomas and higher diplomas required for overseas employment and had attracted students from different parts of the country by publishing regular posts on Facebook stating that her institution offers diplomas and higher diplomas required for local and foreign jobs. Police investigations have also revealed that the fake educational institute operated by the arrested woman has functioned illegally without even the required approval and registration of the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission.

It has been also revealed that this fake institution continues to acquire money illegally by publishing advertisements using various online social media platforms offering higher education and job opportunities for students across the country.

The woman had attracted students from various parts of the country, conducted seminars, online classes, and provided fake diplomas following the conclusion of the course.

Despite conducting the institution without following proper local or international standards, the suspect had charged between Rs.100,000 to Rs.445,000 for the degrees.

Bambalapitiya Police have launched investigations to apprehend a 25-year-old man from Mattakkuliya who had also functioned as a Director of the educational institute. The suspects were released on a surety bail of Rs.100,000 each by the Aluthkade Magistrate’s Court.
