PRIMA Open Golf winners will gain International Ranking says Ranil Pieris

The Sri Lanka Junior Open has become a global benchmark for young golfers, assessing their skills through the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR). Winners of the PRIMA Junior Open Golf Championship 2023 and Regional Junior Open 2024 not only secure the National Junior Champion title in boys and girls categories but also gain international recognition, as highlighted by Sri Lanka Golf President Ranil Pieris at the Royal Colombo Golf Club.

The WAGR, a global system evaluating golf skills, presents valuable opportunities, especially for young Sri Lankan talents, given the scarcity of WAGR-ranked junior golfers in India.

Speaking at a press conference, SLG President Ranil Pieris emphasized the broader benefits for young golfers, noting the crucial role of WAGR Rankings in opening doors for scholarships, financial assistance, and specialized training at foreign universities. The tournament offers participants valuable WAGR points, contributing to their growth in the sport.

President Pieris underlined the significance of international competitions, encouraging such events in Sri Lanka to elevate the standard of players. He expressed the importance of exposing young golfers to global competition, fostering their development on the international stage.

Sri Lanka Golf Junior Sub-Committee representative Niloo Jayathilake outlined plans for 2024, including Regional Opens in Kandy and Hambantota, with potential events at the Air Force Eagles Golf Range near the PRIMA factory in Trincomalee. Jayathilake also mentioned the possibility of extending regional events to Nuwara Eliya, depending on weather conditions, with these locations serving as venue partners for the Regional Junior Opens.

Acknowledging the support from PRIMA, a longstanding sponsor, Jayathilake announced a significant change for 2024. The two-day regional event will extend to three days, incorporating golf rankings and points.
