With the activation of the North-East Monsoon, many reservoirs have started to discharge. The reservoirs associated with the power plants have also started to discharge and accordingly Castlereagh and Maussakelle have been sluice gates since December 16.
Due to the heavy rain falling in the North Central Province, 14 sluice gates have been opened in Rajangana Reservoir two emergency sluice gates in the Angamuwa Reservoir have also been opened. Many families in Kilinochchi district have been displaced due to the overflowing of tanks and reservoirs. 6,719 people in 2,142 families in North province are affected due to flood, according to the Disaster Management Center.
The Southern Province has also been damaged due to the rain. According to this, about 21 homes in Suriyawewa Pahalagama have been severely damaged by water. Due to this, an area of about 1,500 acres of paddy has been flooded.Due to the heavy rains in the Eastern Province, people’s day today life has been severely damaged.
The Meteorology Department has announced that there may be heavy rain of about 75 mm in some places today (18) in Northern, North-Central, Eastern and Uva Provinces and in the Hambantota District.
The Meteorology Department urges the people to take necessary measures to minimize the dangers caused by temporary strong winds and lightning that may occur with thunderstorms. Meanwhile due to two bridges in Kambiliwewa and Weliela in Padaviya getting inundated for three weeks now, around 5,000 people living in the area are facing difficulties. The transportation facilities of the people have come to a complete halt and the Navy has taken action to start a boat service from yesterday.
