The situation at the Matara Prison, in which several inmates were hospitalized after falling ill with a fever, has now returned to normal, Matara General Hospital Director Dr. Upali Karunaratne said.
He said 17 inmates were admitted to the hospital and one inmate had died due to suspected brain fever.
The Hospital Director further said that three inmates were still receiving treatment at the ICU, but they were out of danger.
He also said after December 23, no inmates were reported ill due to the fever.
Dr. Karunaratne said hospital authorities were waiting for reports from the medical research unit to exactly determine the nature of the illness.
He also mentioned that the prison officials are still on alert regarding the health condition of the inmates.
Officials of the Prisons Department took steps to implement strict health measures in the Matara Prison following the outbreak of fever, he added.
