Royal’s Sanviru and Viharamahadevi Balika’s Ratnayake reign supreme

In the National Youth Chess Championship held at Dharmapala College Pannipitiya from December 27 to 30, Dulnith Sanviru from Royal College emerged as the winner in the Under-13 category, securing an impressive 8 out of 9 points in nine rounds. Meanwhile, Dulnima Ratnayake of Viharamahadevi Balika Vidyalaya, Kiribathgoda clinched the girls’ title for Under-13 with a strong performance, earning 7.5 out of 8 points in eight rounds.

Competing against 502 participants in a series of intense matches, Sanviru demonstrated his skill and determination,

ultimately claiming the top position. The first runner-up spot went to Vinuda Wickramasinghe of Boswell International College, while LN Dandeniya of Maliyadeva College secured the second runner-up position with a superior tiebreak score. In the girls’ Under-13 segment, where 228 players contended in eight rounds, Dulinma Ratnayake of Viharamahadevi Balika Vidyalaya, Kiribathgoda emerged as the champion with an impressive score of 7.5 out of 8 points.

Theruni Jayasundara of St Paul’s Girls School Milagiriya and Jenuki Alwis of Lyceum International School, Wattala, secured the first and second runner-up positions, respectively, with superior tiebreaks.

The tournament, spanning four days and featuring participants from Under-7 to Under-19, followed a Swiss format with a time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment from move one. The awards ceremony was graced by the presence of Luxman Wijesuriya, the President of the Sri Lanka Chess Federation, along with other Executive Members of the Federation.
